Humor

Humor is vital to any healing process. Clergy sexual abuse is no exception. Using humor to heal is another weapon in the fight against despair. Using it to personalize one's pain is often a courageous act. It may seem impossible and even unthinkable to look for humor where there is only horror. Some may even find the idea uncomfortable and offensive.

But sometimes the humor of our situation arrives suddenly, unexpectedly, when we're not so guarded, so protected. When it does, we give ourselves a gift, an opportunity to laugh at the dark and cast a comforting light upon us. This laughter helps us understand that it's okay to joke about who we are and what the world has become, and that maybe we could learn to do it more often.

"Humor is the great thing, the saving thing"

-- Mark Twain
